How can I remove a picture from a complicated background using Paint.NET?

I've been wondering sometimes I can't use the magic wand for complicated backgrounds. Is it possible to remove a part of the image from a complicated background using Paint.NET?How can I remove a picture from a complicated background using Paint.NET?
Try this -

Use the magic wand to select the image you want to keep. Go to 'EDIT' then 'Invert Selection'. It will then select everything except the image you want to keep. You can the select 'EDIT' - 'ERASE SELECTION'. Everything will be erased except the image you want to keep.

You can find a step by step tutorial for Paint.net here:

It uses pictures to show you what each tool and effect does.

I hope this helps.

If the magic wand will not work for selecting the image you want to keep, the only other option I know of is to use the line tool to draw an odd colored line around the image you want to keep and then erase the line. Use size 3 or better for the line where possible. That will cut it away from the background enough for you to erase the rest of the background.
